The Chrome Web Store opens later this year. Users will be able to discover a broad range of amazing web apps while developers will be able to reach millions of new users. Google Chrome and the Chrome Web Store will support installable web apps. For now, to load installable web apps you need a Windows Dev channel release of Google Chrome with a special command-line (–enable-apps) flag. Chrome apps sounds quite interesting so i took a while of my time to experiment it. Its quite simple actually and here is my screen now.

If you are running the Dev Channel with –enable-apps flag you may use this Haveeru & Muraasil app as seen on my screen.

Display your Feedburner stats http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/2558/display-your-feedburner-stats

I’ve been away for the last week. My wife and I bought a flat in North London and finally moved in on March 16th. So I’m currently without the internet and won’t have it until the end of March which is frustrating when I want to update my blog but simply can’t so please excuse my infrequent posts over the next few weeks. Here’s a quick piece of code to simply display your feedburner stats on your blog. I’m yet to post my stats publicly on my blog but have seen numerous blogs with the standard feedburner badge which I think is quite ugly. So here’s how to just get the stats using PHP and CURL. You can then style it how you like.

$ch = curl_init(); //set the feed url and options plus a timeout value $timeout=5; curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_URL,'https://feedburner.google.com/api/awareness/1.0/GetFeedData?uri=AshleyFord-Papermashupcom'); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER,1); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT,$timeout); $result = curl_exec($ch); // get just the subscriber number using the regex function $subscribers = get_match('/circulation="(.*)"/isU',$result);

echo 'Papermashup.com has <strong>'.$subscribers.'</strong> subscribers';

//close connection curl_close($ch);

function get_match($regex,$result) { preg_match($regex,$result,$matches); return $matches[1]; }

Jquery Spy http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/2327/jquery-spy

A while ago i spent a long time looking into how Digg made their original spy script, which i can no longer find on their site. They do however have a flash spy which is pretty cool and can be found here. I found a similar script to do the job over at leftlogic.com and used that for a while for a small project of my own, and over the past few weeks found the need to use the spy script for a project at MySpace that I’m working on that aggregates RSS feeds from various sources into one feed and displays them in a simple spy in date order. Due to the scale of the site the page needs to be cached and scalable for other projects. So with that in mind I went on the hunt for a new Spy script and found this one over at Jquery for designers. For the project, we modified the code so on load it paused before the next list item came in allowing for a better user experience, the code was also modified to order the list items correctly which was not the case in the original script. This script requires Jquery version 1.2.6. The [removed]

$(document).ready(function(){ $('ul.spy').simpleSpy('4','4000');

$('ul.spy li').reverseOrder();

});

(function ($) { $.fn.reverseOrder = function() { return this.each(function() { $(this).prependTo( $(this).parent() ); }); };

$.fn.simpleSpy = function (limit, interval) { limit = limit || 4; interval = interval || 4000;

return this.each(function () {
        // capture a cache of all the list items
        // chomp the list down to limit li elements
    var $list = $(this),
        items = [], // uninitialised
        currentItem = limit,
        total = 0, // initialise later on
        start = 0,//when the effect first starts
        startdelay = 4000;//set the initial delay onload.
        height = $list.find(&#39;&gt; li:first&#39;).height();

    // capture the cache
    $list.find(&#39;&gt; li&#39;).each(function () {
        items.push(&#39;

<li>' + $(this).html() + '</li> '); });

    total = items.length;

    $list.wrap(&#39;

<div class="spyWrapper">').parent().css({ height : height * limit });

    $list.find(&#39;&gt; li&#39;).filter(&#39;:gt(&#39; + (limit - 1) + &#39;)&#39;).remove();
    function spy() {
        // insert a new item with opacity and height of zero
        var $insert = $(items[currentItem]).css({
            height : 0,
            opacity : 0,
            display : &#39;none&#39;
        }).prependTo($list);

        // fade the last item out.
        $list.find(&#39;&gt; li:last&#39;).animate({ opacity : 0}, 1000, function () {
            // increase the height of the new first item.
             $insert.animate({ height : height }, 1000).animate({ opacity : 1 }, 1000);
                // fade the first item in and remove the last one
                $(this).remove();

        });

        currentItem++;
        if (currentItem &gt;= total) {
            currentItem = 0;
        }

        setTimeout(spy, interval)
    }

    if (start &lt; 1) {
           setTimeout(spy,startdelay);
            start++;
        } else {
        spy();
        }

});

};

})(jQuery);

The HTML:

<div id="sidebar"> <ul class="spy"> <li> <a href="#" title="Title"><img width="70" height="70" src="image/image1.jpg" title="Title" /></a> <h5><a href="#" title="View round">List Item 1</a></h5> <p class="info">Nov 29th 2008 by <a href="#" title="Visit Profile">Profile</a></p> <p class="tags"></p> </li> </ul> </div>

The style and content of the spy is completely up to you, you could easily add a PHP database query and while loop to this script to make this dynamic. If anyone has any questions implementing a database query into this leave a comment below.

Smashing Retro Icon Set http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/2206/smashing-retro-icon-set

Over the last few months, we have extensively covered the influence of retro and vintage style on modern Web design. We have looked at recent vintage Web designs, showcased posters and typography and presented vintage tutorials. In fact, we are confident that vintage is still in, and that many designers are experimenting with this style to achieve unusual, creative and (hopefully) effective results. So today, we are pleased to release the Smashing Retro Icon Set, a set of 10 beautiful, high-quality “vintage” icons, created by the talented Russian design agency SoftFacade especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The set contains 10 original icons: search, sign-up, calendar, news, RSS, comments, email, ads, home and address.

Download the set for free! You can use the set for free and without any restrictions in both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sub-licensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Download the set (.zip, ICO and PNG, 9.3 MB)

Thank you, guys. We really appreciate your efforts! (al)

Mootools Ajax Example http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/2067/mootools-ajax-example

Here’s a quick example of an ajax request with Mootools. the code below is from sandmoose.com. However I have modified it to get the data using the twitter search api. So the script contains 4 functions, the first function ‘initializeContainer’ makes a new ajax request to our file, in this case ‘twitter.php’. The next function initialises the fade out effect, and tells the function that onComplete to trigger the function ‘updateContainer’. This function puts the data from our file ‘twitter.php’ into the div with and id of contain, once this is done it triggers the function ‘fadeinContainer’ which fades the contents of the div back in. You need to include the mootools framework, here’s the Google hosted link:

<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/mootools/1.11/mootools-yui-compressed.js" type="text/javascript"><!--mce:0--></script>

The Code:

function initializeContainer() { new Ajax('twitter.php', {update:'contain'}).request(); }

function ajaxRequest() { $('contain').effect('opacity',{duration:1000, fps:50, onComplete:updateContainer}).start(1,0); };

function updateContainer() { new Ajax('twitter.php', {update:'contain', onComplete:fadeInContainer}).request(); }

function fadeInContainer() { $('contain').effect('opacity',{duration:1000, fps:50}).start(0,1); }

We need to initialise the function onload.

<body onLoad="initializeContainer()">

Friday Freebies: Flavours Icon Set And Cute Tweeters Icon Set http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/1784/friday-freebies-flavours-icon-set-and-cute-tweeters-icon-set

We continue to deliver fresh high-quality freebies to our readers, and we continue to pursue the diversity of subjects that we like to cover on Smashing Magazine. Since the beginning of the year, each icon set has been dedicated to a specific theme or topic that could be useful in your next project. Today, we are releasing two free high-quality icon sets. Flavours Icon Set Oliver Twardowski, a graphic designer from Bonn, Germany, has put in a lot of time and effort to release this handy icon set especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. His set, aimed to help designers in their Web and user interface designs, contains 177 icons in a resolution of 48×48 pixels. The files are available for in the PNG and PSD sources, so you can modify the files as you wish.

As usual, the set is available as a free download and can be used for any purposes without any restrictions whatsoever. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sub-licensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Download the set (Zip, 2.0 Mb) Download the PSD sources (.psd, Zip, 5.9 Mb)

Behind the scenes As usual, here are some insights from the designer himself: In November 2008 I designed and released my first icon set, Sketch’d up!. This set was 100% vector-based and contained over 100 icons. After finishing it, I knew exactly what was the next task on my list. I wanted to create a pixel-based set of icons for websites and Web applications. For the size of the icons, I choose 48×48px, because for me this is the perfect size to fit on a website. I never thought that it would be such a hard task to create an icon based on pixels that says what it has to say. Pixel by pixel, every single icon of “Flavour” was created over the weeks. I am personally pretty satisfied with what came of it in the end. And I do really hope that you like it, too! Would be a pleasure to hear and see where you used it. Just drop me a line at icons [at] addictedtocoffee [dot] de. And who knows, maybe there’s a Part 2 of the “Flavour icon set” already in my head… All the best from Bonn, Germany, Oliver Twardowski Thank you, Oliver, for your great work! We hope the second part of the set comes soon! Cute Tweeters Icon Set This set was designed by the talented Mirjami Manninen, an illustrator from Finland who released the beautiful RSS feed set Feed Me Animals on Smashing Magazine last year. This new set contains eight transparent PNG icons for Twitter, available in resolutions of 128×128 pixels, 256×256 and 512×512. The sources are in EPS files (for CS4 and CS3), PSD files and AI files (for CS4).

Again, the set is available as a free download and can be used for any purpose without any restrictions whatsoever. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sub-licensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Large preview (JPG, 0.4 Mb) Download the set (.zip, 2.2 Mb) Download the sources (PSD, AI, EPS, .zip, 13,1 Mb)

Behind the scenes As usual, here are some insights from the designer herself: I am an illustrator from Finland. While drawing for one design competition that was about Twitter, I started to really like this little bird, and decided to create a whole set for Smashing Magazine’s readers. I am very excited of the mesh tool in illustrator, andIi want to encourage all designers to try it. I have found it very helpful in my icon design. Greetings to all Smashing Magazine readers! Mirjami Manninen Thanks, Miriam, we really appreciate your efforts! Suggestions for particular icon sets? What icons would you like to be released on Smashing Magazine next? What are you looking for? And, more importantly, what kind of icons shouldn’t we release anymore? We appreciate your input in the comments to this post! (al)

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application? This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. Please notice:

all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper; you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

When year is about to begin "As I live in the northern hemisphere, January will be for me always connected with winter and snow. Snow covered cars, trees and houses, lot of opportunities to ski or snowboard… Therefore I used snow as one of the main themes for my wallpaper. January also means a start of new year. Celebrations of the New Year is always full of fireworks, so I used fireworks in my wallpaper. Maybe you’d ask if we don’t celebrate on 31st of December, on New Years Eve, but it is not absolutely correct. Almost everybody fires their fireworks just after midnight, on 1st of January." Designed by Matus Luptak from Bratislava, Slovakia.

Greenhouse "Winter Greenhouse/French Café - January is always the chilliest and bleakest month of the year. I find myself daydreaming of the Saturdays I spent in Paris finding refuge from the cold in small hip cafés snooping over the shoulders of sketching artists and eavesdropping on chatty aupairs engulfed in espresso machine steam and ever growing jungle like vines." Designed by Tom Pepe from Philadelphia, USA .

New Year "New year new resolution, I would like to start with a desktop wallpaper design:-)" Designed by Eloise Ha from Malaysia.

Global Village "The January sheet of the wallpaper is based on the theme ‘Global Village.’ The main illustration is done by Shlomit Wolf. It shows a peaceful coexistance of flora, fauna and technology on this planet Earth. Technology has made all of us closer. The tagline ’start something good’ reminds us about new year resolutions and the importance of being a good, wiser person. All of us use computers for personal and professional work. My desktop is always messy and I never tamper with the position of taskbar. All the icons or files tend to be on the left side of the screen. So, the calendar wallpaper should not have any numerals on that ?forbidden? area. Also, there should be ample space at the bottom to accommodate the taskbar. A graphic can cover the rest of the space with a nice tagline. The sheet has both the current month?s calendar and the coming month’s calendar. The font used is Century Gothic. For easy ?deciphering,? Saturdays and Sundays are given in a contrasting colour than the weekdays. The coming month?s calendar is justified by the fact that people always plan things in advance. These plans can spill over to a date in the next month. So, no need for turning pages in and out while planning a project or a holiday break." Designed by Anas K A from Bangalore, India.

Winter Night "It’s winter time and I have designed my first submission for the month January. I thought this wallpaper works perfectly because it’s the darkest time of the year but it’s still one of the most contemplative. Well that was my inspiration for this silence, illustrative artwork. I hope it will be on the next Desktop Wallpaper submission." Designed by Christian Rumpf from Austria.

Freddygirl "I thought it would be fun to play with the grays of January. The month is pretty blah, at least in my part of the world. Luckily, a day of sunshine always seems to come along just when your spirits need lifting. Best wishes to all for a joyful 2009." Designed by Michelle Cormack.

Classic Car "This design came about through some experimental photography with a holga camera. I used black and white 120 film and photoshopped in some additional vintage effects. I thought it was an appropriate theme because with holga cameras, you never know what your pictures may turn out like - double exposures, light leaks etc. Likewise, here in St. Louis, Missouri you never know what the weather might have in store from one day to the next during winter months." Designed by Michelle Milla from USA.

Birth of Stars "Since it’s the beginning of a new year, and the launch of our new website, we hope that one day we could be counted among the stars born this month, hence the theme “Birth of Stars”." Designed by webmastrish.com team from USA.

Woodland Deer “After doing the foxes version, I just wanted to do more, so I did a slightly different version with a deer. The non-calendar version contains a quote from e.e. cummings instead of the calendar”. Designed by Seth Nickeson from USA.

Reading on the bus "I like the way people spend time while commuting, specially when somebody is too concentrated to realize that he/she is my model. Although sometimes it’s not easy, because the bus/subway is packed, I love drawing on wheels." Designed by Patricia Montero de Cabana.

preview with calendar: 1280×1024, 1280×800, 1440×900, 1920×1200 without calendar: 1280×1024, 1280×800, 1440×900, 1920×1200

Join in next month! Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves. Thanks to all designers for participation. Join in next month! And smashing January and a smashing new year, folks!

Gmail Backup - backup your gmail account easily http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/697/gmail-backup-backup-your-gmail-account-easily

Gmail Backup saves and restores complete archives of your Gmail email account using Gmail’s built-in IMAP capability. http://www.Gmail-Backup.com The Windows version comes with a simple graphical interface — just enter in your email address and password, select a backup folder, and click the Backup button. It will save your messages in Microsoft’s EML format complete with attachments. The Linux version (which also works with Mac OS X) is command-line only. Besides enabling offline access to your archives, you can use the restore feature to upload messages to another account, making it easy to transfer old messages to a new account. I supports regular Gmail accounts as well as Google Mail in Germany and Apps For Your Domain email accounts, as long as POP/IMAP access is enabled under Settings. Don’t want to risk using a backup tool that’s still in development? Try our guides to backing up your mail accounts to your computer with Thunderbird, Fetchmail or Getmail. SharedZilla Search Engine Launched http://www.ooopx.net/items/view/27/sharedzilla-search-engine-launched

NOTE : THIS PROJECT IS DOWN AT THE MOMENT, WILL BE UP SOON! I have been observing sharedzilla.com for quite some days and found it very useful. So i tried here and there and came across this idea of starting this project of sharedzilla search engine. And i am glad to announce the launch of this project at ooopx.info/sharedzilla. Sharedzilla is one of the best file hosting service available on the internet. I am am sure its better than rapidshare. You can have free direct downloads from sharedzilla.com.

There are lots of other searche engines (even for sharedzilla) available out there. But none of them works better than this one. Check the SearchShared.com. Its just using google to index the results, which very much doesn’t work for sharedzilla. http://www.ooopx.info/sharedzilla
